2020

This project was produced during Amber’s participation with the International Art Biennale: Fresh Winds in Iceland, 2019/2020. The work is now on permanent display at the school in Sandgerði, Iceland.

A statement about the work:

The shapes come from the third grade classroom in Sandgerdisskoli. The unrestricted marks children make are not limited by the constraints of traditional art. They have freedom in their aesthetic choices. This characteristic is often lost with age.

It’s a commentary on how you become “you.” As a child, you are fed information. You then respond to this information and “become.” This is interesting to me - what individuals hold onto, let go of, and feed themselves - and then become.

The line going through the sculptures is an invitation for the viewer to experience a line of sight through a child’s eyes. It’s a reminder: there is often more than one way to see.

Here is an article written about the work: Ferskir vindar, óvænt og skemmtilegt (Fresh winds, unexpected and fun)
